Mark Wigmore's Top 3 - Week of December 12

Monday, 12 December 2016 15:10

It’s Monday and that means Senior Arts Editor Mark Wigmore shares his top picks for your arts and entertainment week ahead.

Yet another Virtual Reality Experience has become available, but this time with a more serious tone than that of gaming and goofing around. The Artscape organization has put something together something very unique for Torotonians. The Sidra Project continues in various locations this week.

The VR film is 8 minutes long and it tells the story of life inside a refugee camp in Jordan through the eyes of a 12-year-old girl named Sidra. The film places viewers within the centre of the camp through a 360-degree experience. CEO Tim Jones spoke to Mark Wigmore about the project.

The Sidra Project is a collaboration with the United Nations, and you can have this experience throughout the week, strapped into another reality via VR gear. Wednesday at The Great Hall at Mississauga City Hall and this weekend at The Christmas Market at The Distillery District. Click here for more info. The Star Wars Machine starts up again this week.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is set to open BIG! On Thursday night. The Disney producers behind the latest in the space cowboy saga have rolled the dice and decided to do something different here. Yes Rogue One fits into the general storyline of the previous 7 films, but you are being asked to meet an entire new cast of characters. A few familiar faces return, including the well documented appearances of Darth Vader. Rogue One is the tale of the rag-tag band of Rebels who captured the schematics for the dreaded Death Star, eventually allowing Luke Skywalker to do his job in the very first Star Wars offering. Mark Wigmore saw the film on Monday and will have a review on Thursday’s Arts Report.

It’s the season of magic. Soulpepper continues to offer its vintage illusionist act, Hocus Pocus, throughout the holidays. But Mirvish has gone the distance to stage “The Illusionists: Live From Broadway.”

This wildly successful production gets underway Tuesday at the Princess of Wales Theatre. There’s unprecedented demand for tickets for this one… with new shows recently being added. 7 master illusionists from around the world will be onstage to wow you. Mark Wigmore spoke with Canadian Darcy Oake.

“The Illusionists” also features “The Manipulator Yu Ho-Jin”, “The Anti Conjuror Dan Sperry”, and “The Trickster, Jeff Hobson”. Click here for tickets. “The Illusionists” runs through January 8th.
