Miriam Makeba's Creative Force

Wednesday, 06 August 2014 15:54

On Thursday night as part of JazzFM91 World Music Festival, South African Canadian singer and Juno winner Lorraine Klassen will dig deep into the repertoire of Miriam Makeba.

Makeba was known as Mama Africa to many and rose as a voice of resistance during  South Africa’s fight to end the oppressive system known as apartheid.  The Johannesburg born singer spent 3 decades in exile.  During that time she collaborated with Harry Belafonte on a Grammy winning album  and won the hearts of the American public.

She continued the fight for racial and social justice up until her death in 2008.

Lorraine Klassen’s mother performed with Miriam Makeba.  Early in Lorraine’s career she vowed to pay tribute to her “auntie” and idol by recording an album in her honour.  On Thursday night head to Hugh’s Room to see the very special performance.

The JAZZ.FM91 World Music Festival is made possible with funding provided by Maytree.
