Now Playing:

The Artistry of ... Paul Desmond

An all-California Pacific kind of cool; easy and laid back; a language of the melodic and unique to one special artist.

This quote by says much about how his sound was felt by so many even early on: “…long legged, lean, bemused, he approached the microphone and transformed the night. With an insinuatingly (sic) pure tone, he spun cool, sensuous, melodic variations on the theme of the moment;…” words used to describe Desmond by Nat Hentoff after hearing the sax player in 1952.

In speaking about his iconic partner in music and artistry Desmond said this about Dave Brubeck, “...I never would have made it without Dave.  He’s amazing harmonically,…You can play the wrongest note possible in any chord, and he can make it sound like the only right one.”

The artistry is a combination of mutual respect, purity of expression and dedication to the sound.
