This week’s Music Memory comes to us from Dennis Kucherawy, a listener and blogger who writes about the Jazz / Theatre / Cabaret scene in Toronto.  You can read his musings at

I recently saw your performance with Broadsway and particularly enjoyed your wonderful arrangement of “Christmas Time is Here”.  It brought back memories of my favourite Christmas show, “A Charlie Brown Christmas”.

I first saw the show when it debuted in 1965.  I was 11 years old and immediately fell in love with Vince Guaraldi's score, especially - just like the rest of the world - LINUS AND LUCY.

Shortly after, around Christmas-time, I visited my aunt and cousin in Toronto (I was living in Welland, ON at the time).  I loved Sam the Record Man and went there specifically to buy the vinyl album.  To my chagrin, not one staffer knew what I was talking about … they’d never heard of it and, of course, said they didn't have it.  I was heartbroken, but didn't give up.  I looked around the store and wondered if maybe it had not been released.  (Then, again, the staffers also hadn’t heard of Vince Guaraldi.)
I scoured each floor until I finally found one, lonely copy – not unlike the Christmas tree in the cartoon itself.  To this day, I'll never forget my elation!  I took the train home and proceeded to drive my mother nuts, playing the album over and over.   I even tried - over and over - to play along to LINUS AND LUCY so I could learn it.

So there you go ...  a Christmas Music Memory!
