    Music Memory - Marla Miller

Music Memory is sponsored by the Alzheimer Society of Toronto, offering the "Music For Memory Project":  a program based on the effects of music and stimulation on people with dementia, by providing them with iPods containing personalized music. For more information, visit alz.to.

On this edition of Music Memory, listener Marla Miller shares a chance encounter with pioneering Canadian guitarist Lenny Breau.

"While I attended university in Edmonton back in the early 70's, I worked for a bank in the summer. One day, a man came up to the desk to open a bank account. I gave him the form to fill in and when he handed it back, I was amazed to see the name "Lenny Breau".  My brother was a Jazz sax player, and because of him, I recognized the name.  I looked up in excitement and I said "Are you THE Lenny Breau?  The guitar player?!"  He was indeed that Lenny Breau and he was just as excited as I was that a bank clerk in Edmonton knew who he was. He told me that I had made his day.  He’d certainly made mine!

I was saddened to hear of his death under mysterious circumstances years later. A loss to jazz for sure … ”
