This week's Music Memory come from vocalist, and New York voices member, Lauren Kinhan.

“I vividly remember loving a song from Carole King's ‘Fantasy’ LP that my mom particularly loved.  I'm not sure how the subject matter was so relatable for a 10 year old, but I connected to it.  I loved the images:  ‘weekday mornings, coffee smell in the air, after you've gone and the children have left for school ...’ I was hooked.  I wanted to know what happened next.  I was so proud when I could sing the ending melody, ‘cuz I'm your woman and you are my man.’

It had soul, it had hope and it was honest.  I would stand up at the dinner table and sing it a cappella.  I think back now and see that there must have been a sweet charm in hearing a 10 year old digging into such an adult topic, but I was channeling my mom and Carole, and that was all I needed to belt it out.  And I remember my mom's face when I sang it:  so proud and so encouraging.

Those singing around the dinner table times were a regular part of forming my love of music the pleasure it brings. It still works its magic to this day, only now it's me cajoling my 11 year old to stand up and ‘sing for her supper’.  She loves it … and because she loves it, we love it.  And that's where it all begins … again.”
