First Listen - Sponsored by Bay Bloor Radio

Matthew, Alexander and Chester of BADBADNOTGOOD or BBNG first met while studying music at Humber back in 2010.  It was a love of hip hop, jazz and alternative (in the truest sense of the word) sounds that brought them together.  After having released two previous albums that explored and gathered them a lot of attention for their take on songs from Kanye West, My Bloody Valentine and A Tribe Called Quest, this third album, III, is their exploration into more of their own compositions and an analogue approach to recording.

First Listen: Brian Blade Fellowship - Landmarks

It is not unusual to hear Brian Blade described as one of the best drummers on the planet based on time spent with Wayne Shorter, Daniel Lanois, Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell.  The outpouring of love for his skill, creativity and compositional skills is overwhelming within the jazz community and beyond.

First Listen: Regina Carter - Southern Comfort

This week, we delve into the latest album from one of the most creative and called for violinists in the world, Regina Carter.  With her debut for Sony, Southern Comfort, Carter was on a musical quest to explore the folk music of the south, songs that her paternal grandfather, a coal miner, would have heard while working in Alabama and sounds beyond.

First Listen: Kris Bowers - Heroes and Misfits

24 year old pianist, composer Kris Bowers is another young player that has grown up in the traditions of his jazz predecessors but wants to move the message forward by incorporating a more modern feel.  In many ways, the musicians of his generation are more powerful than any that has come before it.  A desire to love and honor the heritage of jazz yet not be caged by it.

First Listen: Alberta Hunter - The Essential Vocal Collection

This week’s First Listen is from JAZZ.FM91’s brand new CD compilation, The Essential Vocal Collection in conjunction with Sony.
