First Listen: Patricia Barber - Devil's Food

Every Friday, Brad Barker goes through the pile of CD’s on his desk and his hard drive to find a brand new song to play for you.  It’s called your “First Listen”

This week's First Listen, belongs to Patricia Barber.

Barber’s favorite part of what she does for a living is the internal part.  The research.  She recently wrote… “all of the interesting stuff happens inside your head and at the piano”.

When escaping her steady performance life in Chicago, she often lands at her farmland in Michigan, reads poetry, practices piano, gardens and writes life down.   And that’s exactly what happened for her latest album Smash. Her first adventure for Concord Music. Smash encapsulates a year of overwhelming loss and sadness in her life. 12 original compositions that work on a visceral level.

Her emotion finds a whimsical home in our choice for this week’s First Listen, a track called "Devil's Food," written from Barber's perspective as a gay woman in reaction to last year's efforts to quash gay-marriage in the US.

As for what Barbers favorite track on the album is, in a recent interview with Mark Leohrke,  Barber proclaims,  “I can never pick favorites, they’re like my children….”

Your First Listen for today from Patricia Barbers Smash is “Devil's Food” on JAZZ.FM91.
