Now Playing:

First Listen: Jose James - Trouble

Every Friday, Brad Barker goes through the pile of CD’s on his desk and his hard drive to find a brand new song to play for you.  It’s called your “First Listen”

Jose James recently wrote, "once I realized that jazz singing is just something that I do and that its just a label, it freed me as an artist to just write without any boundaries."  Which is why we find ourselves with a new James record that floats seamlessly thru very different musical worlds. Yes, jazz. But a bit of R&B, Electronica, Hip Hop and Soul.

The highly anticipated Blue Note recording from Jose James is called No beginning No End.  It feels conceptual in nature with Jame’s voice intimately placed as the common thread between the moments. With this album, no limits, no boundaries.  James says, "the first thing you often want to do with jazz sometimes is to be complicated…  but sometimes, it just needs to be simplified."

With tracks featuring label mate Robert Glasper, Chris “daddy” Dave on drums and Hindi Zahra, We’ve chosen a track called "Trouble" as your First Listen.

Jose James, the new album due in January is called No beginning, No end.
