First Listen: Shirantha Beddage - Baker's Dozen

Every Friday, Brad Barker goes through the pile of CD’s on his desk and his hard drive to find a brand new song to play for you.  It’s called your “First Listen”

Today’s first listen belongs to local baritone man Shirantha Beddage. His new album, his second,  is called “Identity”, you can find it thru Addo Records.

The new CD is inspired by themes of cultural identity.  As Shirantha writes: “As a Canadian musician of East-Asian heritage, many of the compositions on the recording are inspired by the search for musical identity, while paying tribute to those who have come before me.” Shirantha also lived in the US for awhile and these sounds reflect on the friendships and connections that he was able to make during his time there.

If you’d like to see him perform live, he’ll be playing with our JAZZFM91 Youth Big Band on December 1st at 3pm at Long and McQuade on Bloor Street.

The album features 9 original compositions and we have chosen “Baker’s Dozen” as our First Listen.
