First Listen: John Abercrombie - Where Are You?

Thursday, 11 October 2012 15:54

Every Friday, Brad Barker goes through the pile of CD’s on his desk and his hard drive to find a brand new song to play for you.  It’s called your “First Listen”

In the liner notes for his latest album called Within a Song, guitarist John Abercrombie states….

"There is an old saying that goes: if you can remember the 60’s, you probably weren’t there. I do, I remember that period quite clearly. For me, it was my introduction to jazz."

When he heard the sounds of Miles and Evans, Rollins and Ornette Coleman, it was like finding a new home.

Well with this new album, after a career that spans close to 50 years, Abercrombie returns to that spirit of adventure and discovery by paying tribute to some of those early influences. Often focusing on new material, with this particular release, Abercrombie does the opposite. Of the nine songs, only 3 are original compositions, the rest are, for example….  Davis’s “flamenco sketches” and Coltrane's “wise one”.

Recorded in the fall of last year in New York City, Abercrombie’s quartet, invited the powerful Joe Lovano into the mix with his sympathetic tenor sax.

The First Listen track we have chosen for you is the opening tune, the McHugh/Adamson standard “Where Are You”
Guitarist John Abercrombie, the album is called Within A Song
