First Listen: Maceo Parker - Higher Ground

Thursday, 04 October 2012 12:33

Every Friday, Brad Barker goes through the pile of CD’s on his desk and his hard drive to find a brand new song to play for you.  It’s called your “First Listen”

Your first listen for this Friday is a BIG recording from Maceo Parker. “Soul Classics” sees Parker back with the WDR BIG BAND.   Nine soul, funk and jazz infused tunes recorded live in Germany in November of 2011. The special guests were outstanding. Christian mcbride on bass, Cora Coleman Dunham on drums and of course Cologne’s 15 piece orchestra, conducted and arranged by Michael Abene.

You name it that’s cool and funky and Maceo has probably been there. Playing with James brown, which he describes as “like being in university”. Spanning all generations with George Clinton, Prince, Ray Charles, De la soul and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The man is there to blow your mind and make you move, in a way that only an icon can.   With precision and fortitude and a serious amount of funk poured right on top.

With “Soul Classics”   they attack James brown, Isaac Hayes and Aretha… However the song that makes us move today is Stevie Wonders “Higher Ground” your first listen for this Friday belongs to Maceo Parker from Soul Classics….
