First Listen: Brad Mehldau - Got Me Wrong

Thursday, 27 September 2012 15:01

Every Friday, Brad Barker goes through the pile of CD’s on his desk and his hard drive to find a brand new song to play for you.  It’s called your “First Listen”

Brad Mehldau and the Trio have a new release out, its called Where Do You Start. Unlike his last release Ode, this collection is the interpretation of 10 other composers with only the title cut as one of his own.  Its his choice of songs that shows the depth of this music fans universe.

Everything from the Hendrix classic “Hey Joe” to Costello, Sonny Rollins, Nick Drake and Clifford Brown.    Evidence that the solid grouping of Mehldau, Grenadier and Ballard can essentially take anything and make it firmly their own.

In a recent interview with Huffington Post, Brad was asked how he selects the pop songs that he covers…  Mehldau replied… “ I only play songs I love - whether it's those ones you mention or Cole Porter or whoever. It's not because they're pop tunes, though - they're just what I think are good strong songs. “

Recorded during the same time period as Ode, half of the songs on this album were done in the fall of 2008 and the other,  inside the spring of 2011.

Your First Listen this week is the lead off track from Where Do You Start, it’s a cover of Alice in Chains  “Got Me Wrong”…
