First Listen: Dafnis Prieto Proverb Trio - You and Me

Thursday, 13 September 2012 16:15

Every Friday, Brad Barker goes through the pile of CD’s on his desk and his hard drive to find a brand new song to play for you.  It’s called your “First Listen”

Fridays First Listen belonged to drummer Dafnis Prieto. His relatively new album is an amazing collection of improvised material featuring himself, Kokayi on vocals and Jason Lindner on keyboards entitled, Proverb Trio.  As The Trio themselves state, “The Proverb Trio is fueled by and embraces that great quality in music; the unpredicatable.”

Prieto was born in Cuba.  Many have said that his arrival in US in the the late 90’s was much like an asteroid hitting New York City.
Everyone began to take notice.  He’s an educator at NYU, founded his own indie label called Dafnison Music, composes music for dance, film, chamber and jazz ensembles and of course is the creator and leader for his own projects like Proverb Trio.

Dafnis also picked up the Macarthur Fellowship Award (aka the Genius award) in 2011.

The song we’ve chosen is the second track on this collected called “You and Me”.
