First Listen: Dafnis Prieto - Triangles and Circles

His arrival in the U.S. has been compared to that of an asteroid hitting New York. Dafnis Prieto is the Cuban born bandleader/drummer/composer and his new CD is called Triangles and Circles.

It’s the sixth album by Dafnis as a leader, and his sextet’s long-awaited second release. The new recording shows the drummer and McArthur Fellow as a very interesting composer as well, with infectious melodies that meld his Afro-Cuban roots with modern harmonies and intense rhythms.

Recorded on the heels of a one-week run at the Jazz Standard in New York City and produced by Roberto Occhipinti, The Opening is your First Listen.
