Miles Davis' "Panthalassa" performed by the BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO at May Cafe (9pm)

Saturday, July 15 2017, 9:00pm - 11:59pm
Sat-July-15: MILES DAVIS' "Panthalassa" -- the National Jazz Award winning BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO will re-create and re-interpret that iconic Davis recording, while acclaimed visual artist Stephanie Schirm paints live! For those unfamiliar with the Panthalassa recording -- 20 years after the end of the jazz-fusion era, producer and Miles alumni Bill Laswell was approached by Columbia records to do a single recording that encapsulated Miles 1969-1974 electric period. Laswell was offered free reign access to the original multi-track tapes and was told he could do whatever he wanted as a re-mix. He occasionally deleted the rhythm sections, brought up obscured instruments, added Indian and electronic droning sounds, constructed moody transitions, premiered previously unreleased passages from Davis' sessions and re-balanced much of the original recordings. The resulting record is a singular stunning overview of Miles' entire '69-'74 period.

On Panthalassa, the Village Voice wrote "Metastructures condensed, themes highlighted, beats punched up by a master tinkerer who's loved them forever, the transcendent buzz of electric Miles nevertheless remains undulant, unpredictable, perverse—and so relaxed about getting where it's not actually going that newcomers will find it hard to imagine how much more unhurriedly it might arrive".

So on Sat-July-15, the BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO will re-create and re-interpret this iconic recording -- as a single structure. They will start playing and not talk again until they've traversed the entire recording -- a 70+ minute experience.

As an added bonus the incredible artist Stephanie Schirm will be painting live as we perform, letting the sounds of this recording wash over her and affect her output. Live jazz colliding with live art!
