This Sunday from 8-9 a.m., it’s another edition of Arts Toronto with your host Mark Wigmore on Jazz FM91

This episode:

On the heels of 5 Emmy wins for the TV series based on Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, CBC Television and Netflix have collaborated to produce a miniseries based on Atwood's beloved book, Alias Grace. Mark Wigmore meets with Alias Grace screenwriter and celebrated actress and filmmaker Sarah Polley at the posh Bisha Hotel for conversation about working with Atwood, finding the voice for the notorious murderess Grace Marks, and how she sees the film-making landscape for women in 2017.

And, Dee Dee Bridgewater is a multiple Grammy Award winner, a Tony Award winner, a NDA Jazz Master and an ambassador for the UN. 62 years after moving from Memphis, Tennessee, the celebrated jazz singer returned to her home, and to the music that helped to shape her musical life. The result is a bluesy, funky and crackling new album titled Memphis..Yes, I'm Ready. It features a cast of musicians who call Memphis home and have the sweet R&B sounds seeping from their pours. Dee Dee speaks to Mark Wigmore about her Memphis journey from her home in New Orleans.

On Garvia Bailey's Giant Steps, a profile on Esperanza Spalding!

And, Canadian Stage’s production of Life After opens at the Berkeley Street Theatre on September 28th. The musical theatre piece was written by 26-year-old phenom, Britta Johnson. The heartfelt story explores the loss of a loved one with a fresh theatrical approach, being noted for its emotional depth and nuance. Britta is already being compared to Stephen Sondheim with how she handles music and lyrics. She speaks with Mark Wigmore in the Jazz FM91 studios.

All that, event updates, and beautiful jazz for a Sunday morning.
