It’s Monday and that means Senior Arts Editor Mark Wigmore shares his top picks for your arts and entertainment week ahead.

    TARRAGON THEATRE: UNDERCOVER

Rebecca Northan is back at Tarragon, but not for a Blind Date. Northan wowed audiences all over North America with her interactive show that saw her and an audience member embark on a full-scale date on stage.

Rebecca spoke to Mark Wigmore about the show in 2016.

This week Rebecca is back with Undercover. The tagline states: One grizzled cop. One audience-member-turned-rookie-detective. One unsolved case.

Undercover is set to use the same construct as Blind Date, but with a a crime-mystery motif instead. Opening night is Wednesday. www.TarragonTheatre.com for tickets.

TIFF: HIGH CONCEPT: THE FILMS OF DENIS VILLENEUVE

We are just weeks away from the release of Bladerunner 2049, the much anticipated sequel to the 80s cult classic. The new chapter’s Director is Canadian Denis Villeneuve. TIFF is celebrating this week.

Bladerunner 2049 arrives on the heels of last year’s Arrival, which was nominated in the Best Picture category at the Oscars. It would capture the imagination of millions of serious sci-fi lovers and lay the groundwork for Villeneuve to take on the ambitious project of a Bladerunner follow-up.

It’s a series that shows off recent work like Arrival, Prisoners and the drug trade crime drama Sicario… but also his early French language films like Polytechnique and Cosmos. CBC TELEVISION: ALIAS GRACE

The CBC has teamed-up with Netflix to bring us Margaret Atwood’s Canadian psychological class and crime drama, Alias Grace.

Alias Grace follows the life of convicted murderess, Grace Marks, and the sensational story around two homicides that took place in 1843 Upper Canada. More than that, it’s a look at the difficult life for women of a certain class at that point in Canadian history. Immigrant life, gender inequality and mental health all come into play and of course remain button pushing-issues in modern times. Sarah Polley wrote Alias Grace for the screen and spoke to Mark Wigmore on a recent episode of Arts Toronto.

Alias Grace has big scope, a stellar cast, and it marks the second Margaret Atwood television production to hit the airwaves this year (the other being the 5-time Emmy award winner, The Handmaid’s Tale). Alias Grace, Monday at 9pm on CBC.
