    MARK WIGMORE'S TOP 3 – WEEKEND OF JUNE 16th

It’s Friday and that means Senior Arts Editor Mark Wigmore shares his top picks for your arts and entertainment weekend ahead

    LUMINATO

The 11th edition of Toronto's festival of creativity continues this weekend with much to enjoy. We'll start with The Famous Spiegeltent, the 100-year-old Belgian mirror tent that is one of the prime venues in 2017. It's been raised at the very central location of David Pecaut Square. David Bates is the charming and impish Aussie who took ownership of The Famous Spiegeltent some decades ago. Listen to his interview with Mark Wigmore here.

This weekend you will see a wide variety of acts in the tent including classical jazz fusionist Jean Michel Blais, Pss Pss from this wonderful Italian clown duo, Soulful West Indian and African rhythms from Lal, and an indigenous opera singer by the name of Jeremy Dutcher.

The Stratford Festival mainstay has teamed up with the National Arts Centre for this symphonic multimedia presentation that will debut here in Toronto at the Sony Centre as part of Luminato. Astronaut Roberta Bondar, author Alice Munro, Mi'kmaw elder Rita Joe and cyber bully victim Amanda Todd, will all be framed through sound and visuals with four Canadian composers creating the music. It should be fascinating evening. 'Life Reflected' is at 7pm on Sunday at the Sony Centre.

The are dozens of other Luminato events happening in other parts of the city too. www.Luminatofestival.com for listings.

Taco fest is so popular that the team behind it is holding the event at Ontario Place! What should you expect? How about a hot sauce bar, as well as one for Margaritas and Sangria. Also, street corn, churros, a Mariachi Band and tacos of course. www.TheTacoFest.ca is how you find out more.

And it’s the Taste of Little Italy this weekend. Beware driving around College street, but go for the food and wine and music. The festival gets underway at 6:30pm Friday and runs through 10pm on Sunday. www.Tasteoflittleitaly.ca for info.

THE NATIONAL BALLET OF CANADA: SWAN LAKE

It’s time, once agein, for a dip in Swan Lake. The National Ballet of Canada presents a piece that is nothing short of iconic. It has been a staple of dance companies around the planet since it debuted in Moscow some 140 years ago. This version was put together by James Kudelka back in 1999, a ballet treasure in his own right. He managed to update the story and feel of the ballet. It had its opening at the Four Seasons Centre Thursday and continues through June 25th. Don’t miss Swan Lake. www.Nationl.Ballet.ca for info and tickets.
