 It’s Monday and that means Senior Arts Editor Mark Wigmore shares his top picks for your arts and entertainment week ahead


It wasn’t that long ago that Jazz FM91 hosting a very special ‘Live to Air’ concert to celebrate Ella Fitzgerald’s 100th Birthday. This week, The Toronto Symphony Orchestra gets into the spirit by presenting “A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald”. Her glorious repertoire will be showcased with symphonic beauty at Roy Thomson Hall Tuesday and Wednesday. TSO Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke leads the concerts with Tony Award nominee Montego Glover, Broadway star Capathia Jenkins and singer-songwriter Sy Smith handling vocal duties. Expect “Blues in the Night”, “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” and others, but also music from her contemporaries like Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday. for info and tickets. 8pm Tuesday night. 2pm and 8pm on Wednesday.


There are a couple of interesting music based documentaries at The Hot Docs Cinema this week. So many cinematic scores have become as famous or even more known than the films they serve. Jaws, Psycho, Star Wars, Batman… unbelievable artistic power.

In “Score: A Film Music Documentary”, Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Trent Reznor and many more discuss their craft, the qualities of a great score; how they elevate a film into something more that moving pictures. ‘Score’ screens this week at Bloor Hot Docs Cinema

Also at Hot Docs Cinema this week, it’s “Bob Dylan On Screen” including screenings of D.A. Pennebaker’s fly-on-the-wall documentary, “Don’t Look Back”, which follows Dylan’s 1965 tour of England. Also “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid” features a soundtrack by Dylan and his film acting debut in the role of Alias. It screens this week as well. And Dr. Mike Daley gives a lecture on Dylan on Friday as well as part of the “Curious Minds” series. for all the details.


Artist Kim Doolittle is in town this week, she can boast 43 years in the music business. It’s a CD release party for talented blues singer, this Thursday night at Hugh’s Room.

On stage, Doolittle will be joined by some wonderful talent, Ken Whitely and Bucky Berger among them. Showtime is 8:30pm and the concert will showcase her new album “Into the Blue”. www.Hughsroom.comfor tickets and info.

And 4-time Maple Blues Award winner Angel Forrest plays Toronto on Saturday night. The talented vocalist for Quebec City has been at it for nearly 3 decades.

She’s a total powerhouse. Angel Forrest plays The Opera House this weekend. Show at 9pm. for tickets.

And since we are hanging out on the fringes of jazz, a fair warning that the legendary English Ska band The Specials are back in the GTA. The group will perform Tuesday and Wednesday night at The Danforth Music Hall.
