    Mark Wigmore's Top 3 - Week of June 2nd

It’s Friday and that means Senior Arts Editor Mark Wigmore shares his top picks for your arts and entertainment weekend ahead

    PBS: SGT. PEPPER’S MUSICAL REVOLUTION

It's been an exciting couple of weeks for Beatles fans thanks to the release of the 50th anniversary edition of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. Producer Giles Martin was once again given the keys to the audiophile kingdom so that he could remaster, and to some degree, reimagine a record that changed the course of pop music forever. If you haven't heard the new anniversary edition, check it out, it really sparkles.

Saturday night at 8pm on PBS stations, its "Sgt. Pepper’s Musical Revolution"; a look back at the creation of the record at Abbey Road, and why it still matters, five decades later. The seminal recording is a result of the band giving up the road and having more time to spend in the studio, and of course the results were jaw dropping. Set your DVRs if you are planning to be out!

    CINEPLEX: THE GODFATHER 45th ANNIVERSARY

A couple weeks ago at the Tribeca Film Festival, the cast of ‘The Godfather’ films were reunited for the 45th anniversary of the original. We are celebrating in Toronto this weekend.

Francis Ford Coppola's epic retelling of the Mario Puzo classic is the stuff of Hollywood legend now. They say you couldn't get ‘The Godfather’ made in 2017, and that may indeed be true. So, we toast this mafia odyssey this weekend with a screening as part of the Cineplex Classic Film Series. ‘The Godfather’ gets a screening on Sunday at 12:55pm and again on Wednesday next week. www.Cineplex.com for details.

THE NATIONAL BALLET OF CANADA: A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE

The National Ballet of Canada is outfitting the Tennessee Williams classic with leotards this weekend, and presenting it on the Four Seasons stage. John Neumeier is the choreographer and his take is to not get lost in the details of the narrative, but to instead focus on the emotional ride within Blanche DuBois’ psyche. www.National.ballet.ca for tickets. Performances begin Saturday night.

    BONUS: ONE LOVE MANCHESTER

It should be noted that CTV will carry the ‘One Love Manchester’ concert this Sunday at 2pm. Look for all the big pop stars, from the Biebs, to Miley, Coldplay and Ariana Grande herself. All 140,000 tickets for the show sold out in just six minutes, and proceeds are going to the ‘We Love Manchester Emergency fund’, which supports those affected by the attack.
