Mark Wigmore's Top 3 - Week of May 15th

It’s Monday and that means Senior Arts Editor Mark Wigmore shares his top picks for your arts and entertainment week ahead.

The latest in the Alien series is set to hit cinema screens this week, some 38 years since the original was released. For those keeping score, this is Director Ridley Scott's third Alien effort, and there have been six official films. If you caught the prequel reboot to the series, ‘Prometheus’, ‘Alien Covenant’ is the sequel to that one. Don’t worry if you are confused, the threat remains the same.

This film brings back ‘Prometheus’ star Michael Fassbender, plus Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride and Demián Bichir. It follows the crew of couples on a ship that lands on an uncharted habitable planet to populate it. Of course they make a terrifying discovery, which you can guess. ‘Alien: Covenant’ opens in select theatres Thursday & wide on Friday.

The Berkeley is home to two interesting stage works this week. Upstairs, Theatre Francais presents Moliere’s ‘Dom Jaun’.

Does the great seducer have to own up to the fallout of his long chain of conquests? Find out at Dom Jaun, running through the 28th. for info and tickets. There are English surtitles at some of the performances.

Also at the Berkeley, Canadian Stage has welcomed The Musical Stage Company for a much anticipated contemporary update on ‘Onegin’. Pushkin's poem and Tchaikovsky's opera have been put through the filter of west coast playwright Amiel Gladstone and long time indi rocker Veda Hille. The sweeping tale of love and infatuation enjoys a high energy score thanks to the award winning duo. for info.

Fan's of the hit TV show ‘Mr. Robot’ will want to take note of what's happening at TIFF Bell Lightbox this week. The star of the Emmy Award winner is Rami Malek and he's both something of a heartthrob, and a cult personality. Certainly he’s an interesting actor to look at. He's starring now in ‘Buster's Mal Heart’.

In the film Rami Malek is Buster; an eccentric mountain man and conspiracy theorist who lives his life on the run from the authorities. He used to have a family, but something changed his trajectory in dramatic fashion.
