    The Union Station Holiday Market

Set in the vaulted spaces of its Great Hall, the Union Station Holiday Market is playing home for seven days to vendors displaying artisanal foods, crafts, clothing, and even a wine delivery service (no, there are sadly no tastings onsite). Here are some of my top picks for getting on top of your holiday gift list.

    1.     Desmond & Beatrice, a ridiculously delicious bakery from Toronto’s east end specializing in cookies, cupcakes, and generalized decadence.

    2.    The Open Road Co., designers of leather bracelets, key rings, and other goods that are stamped with Walt Whitman-style travel references.

    3.    Twill & Print, a Montreal-based maker of vibrant bags, scarves, and mischievous gnome pillows based on the artist’s drawings.

    4.    Lana Filippone, a ceramicist who makes mugs, bowls, and pendants painted with what she describes as “party animals” (this includes, but is not limited to, kittens wearing party hats and sometimes smoking cigarettes)

    5.    And of course, the previously mentioned Kwäf, purveyors of curated Ontario wines that can be delivered to your door on a regular basis.

This is definitely worth checking out whether or not you’re waiting for a train – you’ll be supporting local talents and spending some time in an architectural space that’s worth noticing but often falls into our blind spot. Attendance is free, and hours vary depending on the day – check out www.unionstationholidaymarket.com for exact details.
