Now Playing:

The Artistry of... George Shearing

This piano player, band leader and composer arranger was born blind – Stevie Wonder has said he’s never seen being blind as a disadvantage.

"Seeing or not seeing, life is still life. I don’t need to see to play or sing the way I do. That comes from within." (Ray Charles’ words)

Shearing’s style of playing often involved block chords – it puts chords directly beneath the notes of the melody. Musical tandem motion. It’s rich and plush and in carpet speak like deep musical pile. One of my personal favorites is an arrangement of Somewhere over The Rainbow.
