My Three Would Be... Barbra Lica

Every Week as part of Dani Elwell's "Sunday Afternoon Jazz," Dani asks notable personalities from all walks of life what their top three jazz tunes are.

This week's "My Three Would Be..." comes from singer Barbra Lica. She just released he debut record, "That's What I Do", last month!

Barbra Lica…  your three would be…

1. He’s A Demon – He’s A Devil – He’s A Doll – Betty Hutton

This song makes me laugh out loud every time I hear it. Nobody does intermittent sound effects like Betty. More than that, Betty Hutton is one of those singers that make it all about the lyrics and how she interprets them. I believe her when she sings.

2. Down With Love – Lisa Ekdahl

Not only does Lisa Ekdahl have one of the most unique voices I’ve ever heard, but the contrast between the runaway train band behind her and Lisa’s almost apathetic approach to singing this particular tune is so much fun. It’s not dramatic or angry like other versions I’ve heard; Lisa’s beyond all that.

1. Can Anyone Explain? (No, No, No) – Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong

This is one of the first Ella and Louis tunes I ever heard from the first album I ever owned. When Ella and Louis sing together I swoon.  For the record, I listened to this before I’d ever had my first kiss, so not only are Ella and Louis single- (double?) handedly responsible for me wanting to become a singer when I grew up, they also made me question the institution of cooties.

Next Sunday, its our own server of fine dinner jazz, John Devenish!!!
