My Three Would Be... Kim Mitchell

Every Week as part of Dani Elwell's "Sunday Afternoon Jazz," Dani asks notable personalities from all walks of life what their top three jazz tunes are.

This time we asked a Canadian rock icon who happens to be Q-ualified to tell you about jazz as well because he’s a big fan,  knows his stuff, Kim Mitchell.

Kim, you’re three would be…?

Teen Town - Weather Report

I saw them do this in a soundcheck on a night off somewhere in the USA ... they were in the same hotel and at the front desk we were getting all geeky on them so they invited us to soundcheck ... Jaco was playing drums and Joe Zawinul was doing the bass on his keyboards when they broke into Teen Town ... ... so loved the vibe of Weather Report .. coming from rock it was such a nice chilled change to listen to.

Proto Cosmos - Alan Holdsworth (off Blues For Tony)

Alan is the Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen of the jazz world only he drinks beer ... he says he's not a jazz guitarist ... okay maybe not but he's not in line for the Justin Bieber gig either ... what he accomplished on the guitar is beyond the world of guitar as I know it ...  he gets a bit formulaic from tune to tune but he makes it up for it in sheer mind blowing jazz shredding ...what a ride... kinda like taking a BMW M5 and letting it rip for a few laps...

and finally...

Blue In Green - Miles Davis

Guess i gravitate toward this track because i loved it when Miles  played slow .. slow .. slow ... in a world of shredding guitarists it was always the other side of the moon for me
