    Music Memory - Susan Pollard

    Thursday, 04 February 2016 12:40

Music Memory is sponsored by the Alzheimer Society of Toronto, offering the "Music For Memory Project": a program based on the effects of music and stimulation on people with dementia, by providing them with iPods containing personalized music. For more information, visit alz.to.

This week we hear from listener, Susan Pollard.

"Satin Doll was always my mom's  favourite song, ever since she was a little girl.

When she grew up her love for that song only grew stronger, through her husband who was a jazz musician.

Doug Scott played alto sax in the Lighthouse Swing Band.

Mom always went to his gigs and of course, loved when he played Satin Doll. Doug died of cancer in 2001, but the two jazz lovers had 29 years of life and love and music together.

Now, my mom lives with dementia, but when she hears Satin Doll she dances in to it in her condo in the hallway where no one peaking in the windows can see her.

This morning she will be dancing to Satin Doll and thinking of these two lines that remind her of Doug:

'He's nobody's fool and I'm playing it cool as can be.

    He is my Satin Doll.'"
