    Music Memory - Brad Milko

    Tuesday, 15 December 2015 10:39

Music Memory is sponsored by the Alzheimer Society of Toronto, offering the "Music For Memory Project": a program based on the effects of music and stimulation on people with dementia, by providing them with iPods containing personalized music. For more information, visit alz.to.

This week we hear from JAZZ.FM91 listener Brad Milko.

"I was listening to the station the other day and heard Oscar Peterson’s “Hymn to Freedom”.

It sent me back to  a high school concert in Grimsby, Ontario back in 2007.

My son, Jordan, was in a school jazz quartet that played under the name “Quarter Past Two”.

They played Oscar’s "Hymn to Freedom" which he had been practicing for quite some time at home and it had become a favorite of my wife and I. I would often listen while working in my basement workshop. He would practice on the old 1935 Earnest A. Tonk upright grand piano, on the floor directly above, which we had  purchased a few years earlier for our three children.

They played this piece to a full auditorium. I think the piece surprised many of the listeners with the way it builds to such a climactic ending. It is a truly amazing composition and he played it so very well. It was one of those very proud moments that you cherish as a parent.

He later became the pianist for the Hamilton All-Star Jazz band (an awesome band full of talented young people) and played with them for the next four years. He is now a resident doctor in Ottawa.

Here is the video (below). The picture and sound quality are not very good, but you can still feel it."
