    Music Memory - Mariya Kasyanov

    Wednesday, 07 October 2015 15:27

Music Memory is sponsored by the Alzheimer Society of Toronto, offering the "Music For Memory Project": a program based on the effects of music and stimulation on people with dementia, by providing them with iPods containing personalized music. For more information, visit alz.to.

This week we hear from listener Mariya Kasyanov.

I came to Canada when I was 12-years-old with my parents. In my home country (Ukraine) my parents did everything they could so that I could take piano lessons  (it runs in the family as my mom and uncle used to play it). At first when I went to the music school I only had a tiny 'music board' for kids. After I was finishing 2nd year of music school my parents' friends were moving and were more than happy to give us their piano. I will also never forget how my grandmother (when I visited her in a different town) took me for private piano lessons during the summer break so that I could practice. I was only 6 months away from getting a music diploma when we moved to Canada and the last thing we thought about was a piano.

16 years have passed and I haven't touched the instrument. My husband has never heard me play although he promises to buy one for our kids some day. He and I will be celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary this October. Beautiful melodies will forever remind us of the music we danced to at our wedding, played on a grand pink piano.
