Now Playing:

First Listen: Theo Croker - Afro Physicist

One of the most notable performers from this month's Jazz conference down in New York City was trumpet man Theo Croker.  This Florida native had his debut performance at the age of 12 at his mentor’s memorial service, his grandfather, the legendary horn man, Doc Cheatham.

As a young man, Croker says…  “I would just sit in my room and play my trumpet for hours without knowing what I was doing. I would slowly teach myself new notes and play along with recordings of my grandfather and other greats.  I noticed that I could fit in with what I was hearing harmonically.”

As deep as jazz is as a genre for Theo, he also takes time to write and produce hip-hop, rap, films scores and some contemporary classical pieces.

Moving jazz forward, from his album Afro Physicist, your first listen belongs to Theo Croker, the song is "Light Skinned Beauty," currently available on an Okeh Records compilation called the Sound of Next. Croker’s album is out come April.

Also, Congratulations to Sharon Dickenson who was in picking up her sennheiser Momentum Headphones that she won courtesy of Bay Bloor Radio.
