First Listen: Robert Glasper Experiment - Calls

For your First Listen this week, one cannot ignore one of the hottest jazz artists on the planet right now, Robert Glasper and his new release Black Radio 2. Glasper topped the jazz, billboard and iTunes charts last year with his Grammy winning Black Radio, and ignited the jazz world with some new R&B, hip hop influenced fuel.

This time around, as Glasper writes,

“Black Radio got so much love from the R&B world, so I made a conscious decision to concentrate a bit more on songs for this record, I didn’t want to make the same record twice. I wanted to make a conscious effort to keep the vibe and the spirit of the first one without it sounding the same.”

Exploring Jazz, blues, gospel, R&B, rock, hip-hop, with a jazz tradition, Glasper says, “I’m just visiting all those rooms. It’s my mansion; it’s our mansion. I don’t have to exclude anything. With that said, who knows where I’ll go next.”  We can’t wait.

For your First Listen, we’ve chosen the first single that was released from Black Radio which features Grammy winning vocalist and composer Jill Scott. With the song “Calls”, Glasper weaves a romantic story, some playful answered phone calls and some lush and dreamy piano bits. Calls.  Robert Glasper Experiment with JAZZ.FM91.
