First Listen: Shannon Butcher - Do It The Hard Way

We’re comfortably used to Shannon Butcher approaching well chosen pop songs with her cool, fun sensibility, however this time, Shannon embraces the works of Chet Baker with Butcher sings Baker.

Shannon told JAZZ.FM91, “I've always been intrigued by the androgyny of Chet Baker's voice and I thought it would be interesting for two women to interpret his material, myself the human voice and Rebecca Hennessy the trumpet voice.

Butcher has always been fascinated by the duality of Baker, his darkness, the addictions, his social awkwardness and yet his playing was so evocative and communicative.  And with these tracks there is a balance between the joy of songs like "I’ll Remember April" to the sadness of "Almost Blue".

Shannon Butcher sits in the producers chair for the very first time with a live off the floor feel, joining her is Ross Macintyre on bass and Mark Kieswetter on piano.

The CD release performance is coming up. Butcher Sings Baker is at the Paintbox Bistro on Saturday November 16th.
The track that we’ve chosen as your First Listen is the first track, "Do it The Hard Way".
