First Listen: Derrick Hodge - The Real

Every Friday, Brad Barker goes through the pile of CD’s on his desk and his hard drive to find a brand new song to play for you.  It’s called your “First Listen”

This First Listen for this week belongs to bassist and composer Derrick Hodge and his debut album Live Today on Blue Note. Not only does Hodge have experience playing with Terence Blanchard's band, but if you’ve seen Robert Glasper here in Toronto within the last year, Derrick was there in the back, anchoring the sound for the Experiment.

14 uniquely written original compositions either written by Hodge or as collaborations that visit the world of modern jazz, hip hop, there is an element of acoustic folk and certainly R & B.

Hodge says, This whole album was about putting on a composer’s hat, but also letting go and making sure that I’m giving people raw examples of how I feel on any given day.”

With visits by Common, Glasper, Marcus Strickland and the American String Quartet, for a first offering, Hodge has a  sense of adventure and the chops to lead you on a path where as a listener and a jazz fan, you won’t feel lost.

The song we’ve chosen is the start off track, its called The Real.
