First Listen: Collen Allen - If I Should Lose You

Every Friday, Brad Barker goes through the pile of CD’s on his desk and his hard drive to find a brand new song to play for you.  It’s called your “First Listen”

There is a self assuredness that Colleen Allen possesses with her life, her multitude of instruments, her music.  And oh what music she can play.  Colleen has just released her sophomore record,  "Flashlight."

As she notes, “I heard an interview recently with Wayne Shorter, where he described the past as a flashlight to the future.  I loved the image of the past shedding light, informing the steps we take into the future.  Each of the songs on this recording, represents some past light that has guided me on my path.”

In other words, she chose material that she somehow had a past connection with and the musicians that she brings in for the album were also folks that she has played with many times in the past.  There is a warm, lovely comfort here.  George Koller, Rob Piltch and drummer Larnell Lewis.

For today’s first listen we’ve chosen Colleen’s take on If I Should Lose You, her inspiration for her arrangement of this tune, Hank Mobley.

Colleen Allen, the new album is called "Flashlight."
