First Listen: Etienne Charles - Doin' The Thing

Every Friday, Brad Barker goes through the pile of CD’s on his desk and his hard drive to find a brand new song to play for you.  It’s called your “First Listen”

Today’s First Listen is from innovative trumpet man and composer Etienne Charles, who keeps his jazz roots close and the spirit of the Caribbean as his driver.  This is Charles fourth album and it’s called Creole Soul, as he says,’ soul music that is Creole at heart’.

"As a person in the new world, I've been influenced by so much music. And my family has a mixed background, with French Caribbean, Spanish and African roots as well as Venezuelan influences. I come from a fusion of rhythms, a fusion of cultures. That's what this album is all about."

The album features 10 songs that will move you, with Charles covering everyone from Monk to Marley and of course, his own tunes.  For example, the song we’ve chosen to focus on is the closer, “Doin The Thing”.  When writing it, Charles kept in mind that it’s a rhythm tune with jazz and calypso at its heart.

Etienne Charles, the new album is called Creole Soul.  Your First Listen is “Doin The Thing”!
