Now Playing:

First Listen: Bob James & David Sanborn - Montezuma

Every Friday, Brad Barker goes through the pile of CD’s on his desk and his hard drive to find a brand new song to play for you.  It’s called your “First Listen”

A special festival first listen for this afternoon…

Bob James, David Sanborn and Steve Gadd will be headlining the day’s music on Tuesday June 25th with a special concert on the Mainstage at Nathan Phillips square for the TD Toronto Jazz Festival.  They’re celebrating a new collaboration project called Quartette Humaine, featuring Steve Gadd on drums and James Genus on bass.

It’s been over a quarter of a century since James and Sanborn came together for the award winning “Double Vision”, time spent together, was due.  With Quartette Humaine, James and Sanborn have disregarded the constrictions of the sometimes production heavy pop and r and b world of the past, and have embraced a more acoustic approach.

James says, “we felt it’s far more exciting and adventurous to move forward…the music business has changed, we have changed…”

For Sanborn, he wanted, at this stage of his life to have more fun and play music that’s challenging  outside of the style they’ve been associated with.

For your festival first listen, we’ve chosen ‘Montezuma’ from David Sanborn and Bob James featuring Steve Gadd with James Genus on bass, the album Quartette Humaine.
