First Listen: Manu Katche - Walking By Your Side

Every Friday, Brad Barker goes through the pile of CD’s on his desk and his hard drive to find a brand new song to play for you.  It’s called your “First Listen”

He was the driving rhythmic force behind Peter Gabriel’s  “So” , has worked with Sting, Yousou N’dour, Joni Mitchell and on his own, drummer Manu Katche has released his own solo pieces, grabbing jazz and rock fans around the world. With his brand new self titled release, Katche uses all of the melodic choices that he’s known for, to beautiful use.

Recorded in France in March of this year, Manu enlists a trio of great players to help realize the compositions that he wrote from a piano in his French home. Katche started playing the piano at the age of 7. It wasn’t until he went to the Paris Conservatory that he began his percussive adventure, studying classical percussion and timpani.

And now that Gabriel’s celebratory “So” tour has wrapped up, Katche has begun touring throughout Europe on his own.   Hopefully our own Ross Porter will catch him at the Berlin Festival this weekend.

Your First Listen for this week comes from Manu Katche’s self titled release. The track we have chosen for you is titled “Walking By Your Side.”
