First Listen: Terell Stafford - Brotherlee Love

Terell Stafford picked up the trumpet at 13 years-old, and instantly fell in love with jazz. Fast-forward, and Terell is now a member, and teacher at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Although Terell was born in Miami and raised in Chicago, he found his music in Philadelphia, which is where Lee Morgan is from, hence the title Brotherlee Love .

“This project is about how I was embraced by this city and about a trumpet player who has always been a huge inspiration to me,” Stafford says.

“Lee Morgan was a total genius,” Stafford enthuses. “The trumpet was merely a vehicle to express who he was. There was rasp, there was grit, there was personality, there was sass, exactly who he was as a person"

This record is fresh and swinging. "Hocus Pocus" is your First Listen for June 19.
