Richler Bio Wins Top Non-Fiction Prize

A biography about Canadian author Mordecai Richler by author Charles Foran has won the inaugural Hilary Weston Prize for Non-Fiction.

Foran collected his $60,000 prize (the largest in the country for non-fiction) at a ceremony earlier this week. The book "Mordecai: The Life & Times has already netted Foran the Charles Taylor Prize earlier this year and  is also nominated for a Governor General's award which are being handed out later this year.

The Kennedy Center Gets Into the Swing of Things

The Kennedy Center in Washington DC is unveiling their new dance hall with a 15 day swing festival, aptly named Swing, Swing, Swing.

The unveiling will be marked by a free performance by the Eric Felten Jazz Orchestra and will also feature a tribute to doctor Billy Taylor, who served as the center's Artistic Director fir Jazz from 1994 until his death last year.

We got our name! “Wake Up … with Heather Bambrick”

We here at Jazz FM like to think of this radio station as one that belongs to you, our listeners and donors.  So, when we wanted a new name for the morning show, with Heather Bambrick as its permanent new host, we thought:  “Hey!  Let’s get our listeners to name it!”. 

And so, Heather invited listeners to e-mail us with what they thought would be the best name for the morning show.  The response was overwhelming!!  Over a period of about 3 weeks, we received over 500 submissions – and good ones, too!  There were suggestions like:

U2 Named the Best Band in the Last 25 Years

UK music magazine Q named U2 as the greatest act in the last 25 years at their annual awards gala in London. The magazine, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, had nominated 25 bands for the award.

Awards were also given out to Coldplay who were named the "Best Act in the World Today" beating out Canadian indie stars Arcade Fire as well as others.
