Rich Brown & The Abeng @ The Jazz Bistro

Friday, February 19 2016, 8:00pm - 11:30pm
Electric bassist extraordinaire Rich Brown brings his band, The Abeng to the Jazz Bistro for 2 nights to celebrate the international release of his latest album "Abeng". Abeng is the 3rd album from Canadian electric bassist Rich Brown. Following the 2014 release of his beautiful solo bass album “Between Heaviness & Here” on ADDO Records, Brown has assembled an all-star cast of Canada’s finest modern Jazz musicians. The music on Abeng utilizes progressive concepts in rhythm, harmony, and melody while keeping the listener (and the musicians playing the music) connected and engaged. Drawing upon jazz-funk and jazz-rock influences ranging from Weather Report to Roy Ayers, the music is also directly influenced by a certain segment of New York based artists that Brown has worked with over the years. Artists such as Dapp Theory, Steve Coleman, Rudresh Mahanthappa, and Steve Lehman have helped to shape the sound of Abeng. It is complex music that remains dedicated to the groove, and in doing so maintains a level of accessibility that any listener can appreciate without feeling disconnected. A little more about Rich Brown... Rich Brown has been an active member of Toronto's culturally diverse music scene since 1992. He has released 3 albums as a leader, and currently tours with New York based saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa. Rich has performed and recorded with some of the finest musicians in the world including Donny McCaslin & Casting for Gravity, Carol Welsman, Glenn Lewis, Dapp Theory, Steve Coleman & 5 Elements, James "Blood" Ulmer, Vernon Reid, Andy Narrell, Kim Mitchell, David Clayton Thomas, Bruce Cockburn, and Hermeto Pascoal, to name a few. He has appeared in the feature film "Glitter" starring Mariah Carey and the made for TV movie "The Natalie Cole Story" starring Natalie Cole as well as the television series "Soul Food". Rich also leads his own band rinsethealgorithm and has appeared on over 40 recordings ranging from Jazz to Funk to Latin to traditional Asian and Arabic music.
