The Big Band Tap Revue

Sunday, December 07 2014, 8:00pm - 11:00pm
The Toronto Jazz Orchestra (TJO), along with tap dancer Allison Toffan and some of Canada’s top tap talent, present the Big Band Tap Revue – a project exploring big band and tap through the ages – on Sunday, December 7 at Lula Lounge. Doors open at 7 pm for an 8 pm show; tickets are $20. The Big Band Tap Revue is a co-creation of Grossman and acclaimed tap dancer Allison Toffan. With the Big Band Tap Revue, they seek to dispel any preconceived notions still attached to their respective art forms. While the evolution of big band music is well documented, “big band” still means “swing era” to many; tap is almost always thought of in terms of ages gone by. On December 7th, repertoire will range from the classic swing of Count Basie and Oscar Peterson to more contemporary sounds like Thad Jones and Hugh Fraser, along with pop and hip hop – music which explores the historical place and connection of the two art forms, while also demonstrating how far each has come: the evolution of big band music beyond a dance form; the integration of tap into core music making and soloing. The 18-piece Toronto Jazz Orchestra will be joined by Allison Toffan along with tap colleagues Danny Nielsen, Ryan Foley, Kylie Somerville and Travis Knights. The Big Band Tap Revue is generously supported by a Toronto Arts Council Dance Project (Creation) grant and by Black Oak Brewing Company. The Toronto Jazz Orchestra and Allison Toffan present The Big Band Tap Revue Sunday, December 7, 2014 Doors 7 pm; show 8 pm Lula Lounge, 1585 Dundas Street West $20 Tickets available in advance at thetjo.com/bigbandtap or at the door on the night of the performance.
