Jim Vivian - Solo Bass at 80 Gladstone

Saturday, November 15 2014, 8:00pm - 10:00pm
During the month of November, 80 Gladstone will be hosting a 3-part jazz series featuring some of the brightest talents in Canada. 80 Gladstone is one of Toronto’s newest, most exciting and unique performance spaces. Located at the corner of Gladstone and Alma (just north of Queen), this versatile space hosts yoga classes by day, and concerts by night. The beautiful space seats about 50, including comfortable couches for informal lounging. A no-shoe environment, 80 Gladstone used to be a Portugese grocery store, but all that remains from it’s prior incarnation is the sign. Three very exciting and unique shows will be presented at 80 Gladstone during the month of November. On November 15th, one of Canada’s preeminent bassists, Jim Vivian will be kicking off the series with a rare, solo performance (first time ever!) On November 22nd, Jeff LaRochelle brings his innovative jazz/chamber crossover project, Origins. Finishing off the series is the groundbreaking trio, Myriad3, fresh off tours of Western Canada and the Eastern United States. A little more about the artist… Jim Vivian has been at the forefront of music making in Canada for over 25 years, with more than 25 recordings nominated for a Juno. Collaborators include national artists Mike Murley, Don Thompson and Steve Amirault, international artists including Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone and Dave Leibman. Originally from Newfoundland, Jim moved from St. John's to Toronto in 1979 to pursue classical bass studies, and during the early 1980's began focusing more on jazz and improvised music. An experienced teacher, Jim is presently on faculty at the University of Toronto, York University, and the Humber College Community School.
