Jazz Night in Barrie

Sunday, August 31 2014, 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Guest: Paul Pacanowski - Sax, Flute & Keyboard; with Amanda MacLeod - Keyboard, Richard Guy Jackson - Drums, and Joe Huron - Guitar. Paul Pacanowski was born in Poland and studied music performance, as well as theory and composition, with J. Wyzuty at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. He is trained in tenor and soprano saxophones, clarinet, bass clarinet, and flute. Paul is the recipient of grants from New Music Courses in Darmstadt, the Kosciuszko Foundation, and Indiana University School of Music. With interests in both classical and jazz music, he has appeared in numerous festivals including Warsaw Autumn Festival, the Guelph Jazz Festival, the DuMaurier Jazz Festivals in Toronto and Montreal and the Bix Beiderbecke Festival in Iowa. He has also performed with the Polish Chamber Orchestra, Nafshenu Orchestra, Gruppo Bandistico Giuseppe Verdi, the Rainbow Gardens Jazz Orchestra, the Brampton and North York Symphonies, The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, and his own rsp jazz quartet. As a composer, Paul has provided music for Last Dance, a pantomime theatre production premiered in London in 1989; a piece for jazz quartet and symphony in 1990; and Three Sketches for Solo Saxophone and Orchestra in 1994. The greatest feather in his jazz cap so far, though, is the rsp quartet's invitation to play the 1996 Montreux Jazz Festival, on the strength of his rsp jazz quartet CD released the previous year.
