    Felix Wong Duo at Jazz Bistro

    FELIX WONG Felix Wong is a Toronto based jazz pianist. He began playing the piano at the age of 4. He is a self-taught jazz musician. His many musical influences include Bill Evans, Esperanza Spalding, Michael Brecker, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Jaco Pastorius and more. He is a former member of the Toronto All-Star Big Band, where he has performed with the legendary Doc Severinsen and Jackie Richardson. He has travelled with the band, performing venues such as Casa Loma, Old Mill Inn, the Beaches International Jazz Festival and more. He is currently a member of the Jazz FM 91.1 Big Band, where he has had the opportunity to perform with Joey Defrancesco. Felix was chosen to be a part of the 2013 Conn-Selmer Centerstage Jazz Band under the direction of Alex Dean, feautring some of the most outstanding young jazz players in Canada. Recently, he also performed in the TD Young Jazz Showcase in Port Hope, under the direction of Denny Christianson, where he opened for the All-Canadian Legends Renee Rosnes, P.J. Perry, Terry Clarke, and Neil Swainson. PETER CAVANAGH Peter Cavanagh is a jazz saxophonist in the Greater Toronto Area. His aspirations for music began at a young age. In high school Peter won an award for “Outstanding Jazz Soloist” at an international festival in New York. Peter’s influences include Cannonball Adderley, Wynton Marsalis, Keith Jarrett, Dexter Gordon, Marcus Miller, Michael Brecker, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Herbie Hancock, Chris Potter, Artie Shaw and many more. His musical interests lie in swing, bebop, modal jazz, funk and Latin jazz. Peter is also a skilled clarinet and flute player. In Grade 12 Peter accepted his offer to York University’s music program. After his first year he received the “Elmes-Bedford Prize for Jazz Performance”, an award given to one student a year who shows potential to be a strong jazz musician. In his third year he received the “Douglas Menzie-Phillips Jazz Scholarship” for his great achievement in the York jazz ensembles. At York, he studied with Canadian icons such as Kelly Jefferson, Kevin Turcotte, Mark Eisenman, Barry Elmes, Al Henderson and Lorne Lofsky. Peter continues to participate in every musical opportunity he can at York. Peter networks and collaborates with many musicians at York and beyond on various musical projects. Peter was also a member of the “Toronto-All Star Big Band” for five years where he had played a large repertoire of big band jazz music. He had worked as a tenor saxophone player, a lead clarinet player and a lead alto saxophone player. Travelling with the band, Peter has had the opportunity to play at prestigious venues and festivals such as The Palais Royale, Casa Loma, The Port Hope Jazz Festival, Corso Italia and The Beaches International Jazz Festival. As a part of the band, he has also had the opportunity to play with jazz icons such as Peter Appleyard, Benny Golson, Cleo Laine, John Dankworth and Doc Severinsen.
