The Aeolian Hall is excited to host Fred Hersch on Saturday, February 1, 2014 for a solo performance. This event is currently the only Canadian appearance on the upcoming tour by this highly-regarded jazz pianist and composer. Recently nominated for his sixth Grammy Award, Mr. Hersch balances his internationally recognized instrumental skills with significant achievements as a composer and bandleader, as well as remaining an in-demand collaborator with other noted jazz performers. Admission to the concert is $35.00 in advance or $40 at the door. Tickets are available through The Aeolian box office by phone (519.672.7950) and online ( Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1955, Fred Hersch began playing the piano at age four and was composing music by age eight and winning national piano competitions starting at the age of ten. He has been awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship, his music has been featured on a wide variety of radio programs including NPR’s Fresh Air, and he has taught at prestigious institutions such as The Juilliard School. Mr. Hersch is currently on the Jazz Studies faculty of The New England Conservatory and at Rutgers University. A passionate spokesman and fundraiser for AIDS services and education agencies since 1993, Mr. Hersch has also produced and performed in numerous concerts for charities that have raised over $250,000 to date. Mr. Hersch's influence has been widely felt on a new generation of jazz pianists, from former Hersch students including Brad Mehldau and Ethan Iverson of the Bad Plus, to his contemporary Jason Moran, who has said, "Fred at the piano is like LeBron James on the basketball court.
