Mike Downes Parallel Streams Ensemble CD release - "In the Current" Saturday February 8, 2014 at 8 PM $30 Adult with CD; $20 Students with CD; $20 Adult; $10 Student “As gifted a composer as he is a bassist." - International Society of Bassists "Mike’s time playing is delightfully inventive...his lines are clear, hip, and agile. His technique and intonation are extraordinary.” - Jazz Player “Emotionally direct, profoundly lyrical bass work." - The Whole Note The Mike Downes Parallel Streams Ensemble is an 11-piece jazz group featuring a unique configuration of many of Toronto’s most outstanding musicians. Led by one of Canada's foremost bassists and composers, the group showcases Mike's outstanding melodic and textural compositional approach that takes full advantage of the timbral possibilities of the ensemble. If Gil Evans, Gunther Schuller and others were creating "third stream" music that fused elements of Western art music with jazz in the 1950s, then Mike is taking us into 2014 with music that "emanates from all the experiences in my life and from the many tributaries that have converged into the collective stream of music." (from In the Current liner notes). In the Current began as a suite written for a master's thesis at York University. Mike received a composition award from the Toronto Arts Council to composer further material for the group. Following that, it was chosen as one of three Toronto Downtown Jazz Special Projects for 2012. With the help of a Canada Council of the Arts Production Grant the group recorded In the Current in two short days in the ambient space of Gallery 345. To celebrate the release of In the Current on Addo Records the ensemble will be performing in the same beautiful space.
