Michele Mele CD Release at Jazz Bistro

    Tuesday, October 15 2013, 8:00pm - 11:59pm
Michele Mele is on a roll. An acclaimed singer/songwriter with six albums under her belt, she declares “I am more motivated and determined with my music now than ever.” Whereas most jazz vocalists are content to cover bossa nova classics, Mele is driven to add to, rather than just draw from, the tradition. All ten tunes on Dream are new original compositions that fit seamlessly into the bossa vein. They confirm Michele’s reputation as a masterful communicator, able to create melodies and lyrics that resonate deeply in the heart and soul of the listener. Michele first worked with noted Toronto producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Greg Kavanagh on Cha Cha, and recording again took place in Greg’s Toronto studio, Kavasound. Describing the collaborative process, Michele notes that “on Dream I played everything on piano and threw a vocal on every song. Greg would put together a drum and bass line and play guitar and we’d decide how we’d treat everything. I wrote the charts, he revised some, and then we did everything in two days with the band, and then I finished the vocal tracks over another two days.” Dream begins with the haunting saxophone refrain of the title track and concludes with a gorgeous saxophone solo on “Time To Share” that slowly fades into the distance. In between lies a true aural treat that washes over you like a gentle warm wave on a tropical beach. “Love Song” is just that, sweet in its simplicity. “It’s Special” features some impeccable singing in Portuguese, while “Things I Believe” is a list of things Michele has faith in (“love at first sight, fairy dust at night”). There’s a melancholy feel to “Time To Share,” a song that will pull gently on your heartstrings while seducing you with its lilting melody. Her effortlessly fluent, warm and relaxed vocal delivery is perfect for the genre (it has elicited comparisons to Astrud Gilberto), as are her poetic and personal lyrics.
