The Toronto Jazz Orchestra presents FUNK!

    Saturday, November 20 2010, 3:30pm - 6:30pm
The Toronto Jazz Orchestra presents FUNK Saturday, November 20, 2010, 3:30-6:30 pm The Rex Hotel, 194 Queen Street West For immediate release – Toronto, October 20, 2010: The Toronto Jazz Orchestra is sure to get the audience moving on Saturday, November 20, 3:30-6:30 pm at The Rex Hotel with their celebration of all that is funky. The ensemble will be playing funk compositions and arrangements by Thad Jones, Rob McConnell, Phil Nimmons, Hugh Fraser, Josh Grossman, Christian Overton and Maria Schneider; they will also be performing the Canadian premiere of four arrangements by Conrad “Prof” Johnson, director of the acclaimed Kashmere Stage Band and subject of the 2010 documentary Thunder Soul. “Music should get people moving, and there’s no music like funk music to get people into the groove,” said Toronto Jazz Orchestra Artistic Director Josh Grossman. “I’m excited to be bringing together these two styles for this show – great funk grooves and the power of a 17-piece big band.” A highlight of the performance will be the presentation of four arrangements by the late Conrad “Prof” Johnson. Mr. Johnson taught for 37 years in Houston, Texas, and directed the Kashmere High School Stage Band, which won 42 out of 46 contests entered between 1969 and 1977, recorded eight albums featuring more than 20 original compositions by Johnson and traveled throughout Europe, Japan and the United States. At a time when most high schools were playing the standards of the big band era, “Prof” arranged the funk, soul and R&B tunes of the day for his stage band, encouraging a whole new generation of young musicians to participate in the stage band setting. These arrangements are rarely made available to the public, so their performance will be a Canadian premiere. The Toronto Jazz Orchestra (TJO) was formed in 1998 by Artistic Director and Conductor Josh Grossman and is made up of some of the top emerging jazz talent in Toronto. Each fall, the TJO presents “the music of”, featuring the music of a certain big band, composer or musical style. Previous presentations have included the music of Phil Nimmons, Cuban Fire, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, the Stan Kenton Orchestra, Duke Ellington and Buddy Rich.
