Jazz at the Grammys

Last night in Los Angeles the 55th annual Grammy Awards were announced with the jazz awards being handed out during a pre-telecast ceremony which included a performance by nominee Hugh Masekela.

Chick Corea won 3 for Hot House with Gary Burton including beating himself along with Ravi Coltrane, Kenny Garrett and Brad Mehldau, winning the Best Improvised Solo award for Hot House with Gary Burton.

Esperanza Spalding took home two statues last night, Best Jazz Vocal Album for Radio Music Society as well as Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for the song "City of Roses."

Pat Metheny's Unity Band won Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Arturo Sandoval's Dear Diz was names Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, Impressions from Chris Botti won Best Pop Instrumental Album and Sir Paul McCartney walked away with the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.

Other notable jazz wins at last night's ceremony include Robert Glasper's Black Radio winning Best R&B Album and Dr. John receiving the Best Blues Album award for his latest effort Locked Down.
