My Three Would Be... Terry McElligott

Every Week as part of Dani Elwell's "Sunday Afternoon Jazz," Dani asks notable personalities from all walks of life what their top three jazz tunes are.

This week's "My Three Would Be..." comes from our very own host of Midday Jazz, Terry McElligott.

Terry, your three would be?

"Of course, as a broadcaster yourself you know how vexing it can be when someone asks you what your favourite tunes are. For us, the answer might change from week to week. There's always something new out there.

But I'm always up for a good, old fashioned vex.

Here are three pieces that always have and, I'm sure, always will resonate in me."

1) The Moon is a Harsh Mistress - Charlie Haden (bass) and Pat Metheny (guitar)

This Jim Webb tune always sounded perfect to me. I find myself captivated by the interplay between the two musicians, both of whom make it sound so easy. They make it sound like there's an entire group playing. Pat's playing - his whole sound, really, appeals to me. I hear huge open space in it.

2) Windows - Bobby McFerrin

Always a fave. Bobby's imaginative version is tops with me. Chick Corea wrote this one, a waltz. I am the world's clumsiest, most incompetent dancer but this tune dances in my mind. More vast space for me in this one. 3) Bill Evans - Peace Piece

This reminds me of Erik Satie's music. I know it has a melody, but for me it's the quiet scene it sets. Fog, a footbridge with no one on it, the vista from atop a mountain, clouds passing overhead. Or flying around them. Reminds me very, very much of the sense of quiet vastness and being among the angels that you can experience in flight, if you look out the window.
